WHAT ARE ICE CLEATS?
At BWSR, we love snow boots. They’re warm, they’re furry, they’re like giving our tootsies a lovely hug and best still, they keep our feet planted on terra firma. What’s not to like about that?
Well, for some people, quite a lot. Not everyone is a fan of snow boots, or even boots at all, if we’re honest. We know, it’s hard to believe.
The reasons for this are manifold – from not liking the heavy clumpy feeling that some boots can bring, to simply being unable to find a good fit.
Plus, not everyone has the time to take themselves off boot shopping, come the first snowflake of the winter.
Perhaps you’re broke, or you just don’t get a lot of snow in your part of the world. Perhaps it snows tons, but you’d still prefer not to have to wear winter boots. Hey, we’re not here to judge!
In any event, for whatever reason, a lot of folk find themselves faced with starting the winter season, with nothing more than their best pair of tennis shoes, or sneakers at their disposal.
Sometimes, a good pair of casual shoes might be warm enough and even water resilient enough to power through the winter chill. However, what they lack is the traction to deliver you safely from slipping and breaking your damned tibia in seventeen different places.
So, what’s the answer? Be forced to don a pair of snow boots, that you really don’t want in your life, or risk skidding on your derriere the entire winter season.
Perhaps you don’t need to do either – because with the simple addition of some clip-on cleats, your regular footwear can be transformed into turbo charged snow boots!
Better still, these can be easily carried – unlike the dead weight of the average snow boot – and stealthily added to footwear, if and when the white stuff makes a sudden appearance.
This is dead handy to have as a backup and maybe something that you might consider keeping at work, for unexpected snow bound commutes home. Because we know that these can happen.
Of course you are!
STABILICERS WALK TRACTION ICE CLEATS
The pair of ice cleats in question comes from manufacturer STABIL. Based in Maine, this product can truly claim to be made in the USA and has been keeping feet on the ground since 1990.
Within their range of footwear, these Walk Traction Ice Cleats are the prototype for the rest of their designs.
This means they are specifically designed for everyday walking in the white stuff.
To categorize further, that means general walking, not running, trailing or hiking. There are more specialized models for this.
Others in the range include, Stabil Heel, specific heel traction cleats; Maxx Traction for er, max traction, Run Traction for… running, Hike Traction and Hike XP for, you guessed it, hiking and… well, you get the picture.
The Stabilicer Walk is the go to model in this range and the one we think best chosen by the general or casual walker.
If you want are looking for something a bit more heavy duty, then you might be better checking one of the others out.
THE STABILICER WALK
Boasting multi directional steel cleats, these are made from a Thermo Plastic Elastomer material, which brings the suppleness of rubber, with the lightness of plastic.
The cleats cut into the ice below, ensuring your grip remains secure and, crucially, you stay upright. Which is always better.
These can be worn over both boots and shoes, although we would always advise bringing the footwear you want to wear them over with you, when you try them on – just in case.
Design wise, there are a few colors to choose from- obviously they are not a fashion item, but they have been made to blend in with your existing footwear, as much as possible.
Choose between black, orange, pink and yellow, for your nearest match.
WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THESE CLEATS
Simple, practical and does what it says on the tin. This is a simple product, designed to do a simple job – transform your everyday footwear into something you can wear in the snow.
And in terms of that, we think it succeeds. More importantly, so do you. The vast majority of Stabil customers think these do a superb job in the snow and ice.
Additionally, we haven’t heard anything about them being uncomfortable to have on or problematic to wear. They may also be accessorized with a powder strap or other items.
On top of all this, they are adaptable, lightweight, easily stored, portable and cheap.
When you think how much you could have saved buying specialist boots for the snow, then under $20 is not a big ask.
ARE THERE ANY ISSUES WITH THESE ICE CLEATS?
With clear customer feedback over 80% happy, we are satisfied that you will not regret your purchase of Stabilicers Walk Traction Cleats.
But we would be lying if we said there were no issues at all with these cleats. Fortunately, they are mainly rectifiable.
The main problem comes from the sizing – these run small, at least by one size.
We would advise anyone to order a size up from their usual size – and that’s even if you don’t have especially big, wide or ‘problematic’ feet. Yetis amongst us might want to go up by even more than one fitting.
Other than this, most of the gripes associated with this product are minor. Mainly, they seem to stem from overuse, or being used for purposes other than their primary intention.
Again – these are the Walk Traction Ice Cleats. You are not going to sprint up Everest wearing these. Or voyage to the Polar Ice Caps. Please.
