OUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The thing we like about Merrell’s as a brand is their no nonsense and incredibly comfortable shoes and sandals, specifically for women.
Because, as we all know, sandals for women can be a thorny issue, if not something that feels like a bed of thorns for your poor feet, if you’re not careful.
But when it comes to Merrell, we are hopeful that this will be a different story.
Well known for super comfy shoes and sandals, these Around Town Backstrap Sandals look as if they should be no exception.
In terms of color, these are available in seven varieties – Brown, which are… brown, Poseidon, which are a shade of blue, Rose, which are pink, Freesia, which are a kind of reddish brown, Vertiver, which seemed to be positioned somewhere in between gray and green, and Black.
Or to be more precise, Black and Black/Black – which would be black with more black, as opposed to the two tone “Black”. Confused? We are a bit.
It seems that some of these sandals come in two tones, but not all of them.
The Poseidon is a two tone shade of blue, with the darker on the back strap and across the strap nearest to the ankle, but with a lighter blue on the toe strap.
The Rose is toned down also by the addition of the two tone color combi – the rest of the shoe is pink, but the toe band is more of a gray. Meanwhile Freesia combines a reddish brown on the top, with earthier tones on the toe band.
If you are looking for only one color then the Brown certainly are one solid color as are Black/Black.
Otherwise, these are a fairly low key, no fuss sort of design. There’s nothing girly about these sandals and we’d be lying if we described them as “dressy”.
Maybe the clue is in the name of the shoe. These are called “Around Town”, indicating that they are an everyday wear kind of sandal. These are a sandal which is intended for the hard wearing, commonplace type of situation.
We would definitely expect to wear these (surprise surprise) around town. These are a sturdy pair of sandals to sling on and then use for the hard slog of walking around town. They will do for shopping trips, work, even the odd off the beaten track trail.
However, we might want to ditch them in favor of something more uncomfortable, in the event of going out for the evening. Especially, if we wanted to be glamorous. Because, being completely honest, these are not for dressing up in.
But this does not mean that these aren’t a reasonably smart and presentable pair of sandals for everyday use. We might not wear them anywhere terribly formal, but that could just be a personal choice.
They are straightforward and sensible day wear for plenty of walking – whether that be over sand or grass, or asphalt!
In terms of design, these have an adjustable back strap and a comfy looking cork foot bed.
The grip potential of these sandals is maximized both on the inner sole foot bed and on the outer sole, with the supportive foot bed and Mselect grip outsole, respectively.
These are made from full grain leather and also feature pig skin on the upper. So no, they are not vegan shoes!
With a molded nylon arch shank, these have been designed to give your feet all the support that they could possibly need and we think they look like a good idea for anyone with podiatry problems, who need a little more cushioning.
At twelve ounces, whilst these do not weigh your feet down, they are not exactly feather light either. But this provides the support and protection that your feet crave.
They should also ensure a certain degree of longevity and wear –a-bility, we feel.
All in all, these look like a sharply executed and high quality product.
But what are they like to have on?
With 81% of customers reporting that these are true to size, we think we can safely say go ahead and order your usual size in these sandals.
With only a very small number of people thinking they stray on the large side, it seems likely that you will get the perfect fit, the first time around.
Like most sandals, these are not available in a half size, so you will have to go up or down, if your feet are a half. Most customers have not experienced a problem doing this.
As we expected, Merrell has not let us down in terms of comfort, when it comes to these Around Town Backstrap Sandals.
They are comfortable and need no breaking in time. What is more, they ought to eat up a fair few miles, each day, without any complaint.
If you are looking for sensible sandals to wear day in, day out, then we think these fit the bill.
As the name suggests, these are sandals designed for urban living. But that shouldn’t mean they can’t take the odd trip off-road in their stride, as well.
They are not waterproof and the cork foot bed should not really get wet.
To clean them, use a soft cloth and soap and water. Do not put them in washing machine!
