This Kamik Men’s Nationplus Boot is a great value for the price. It’s a terrific choice for people who need a good boot on their next winter snowboarding vacation. They’re equally good for shovelling during that next snow storm. I’ve used it for both, but find more use for this boot after a snow storm. While normally I dread watching the flakes fall from the sky, with these boots, I don’t have to worry about my feet becoming cold or wet.

A Little About the Company

If you want to buy from a company that takes its environmental impact seriously, you can be at ease buying from Kamik. They have a 100% recycling system for their material waste. They also have a recycling program for their customers. Old Kamik rain boots can be turned in at participating retailers, and the company will turn those old rain boots into new products. They produce many of their products in North America as well. Although, the Kamik Men’s Nationplus boot is imported.

Great Features

Removable Liner – The liner can be removed to dry in case some water sloshes over the tops of the boots.

Speed-Lacing Eyelets – These come with lace locks that will hold the lower laces in place for a tight fit.

Low weight – At 1 pound 13 ounces per boot in size 11, these aren’t going to be heavy boots that drag you down.

How Warm is the Kamik Men’s Nationplus Boot?

There are 200 grams of Thinsulate inside this boot, which doesn’t seem like a lot of warmth, but the insulation in this boot isn’t sequestered behind lining. The thick, rubber sole will keep the foot away from the cold concrete, as well as frozen ice or soil. Another increase to the R-Value is the metallic lining that is sewn into the boot liner. The comfort rating on this boot is -40 degrees.

Waterproof or Water Resistant?

There’s a difference between waterproof and water resistant, and Kamik Men’s Nationplus boots are waterproof to a certain extent. From the sides of the boot, there won’t be any water allowed to enter the material. The sole and outsole are one piece of molded rubber with a waterproofing material, along the stitching that meets the other materials. There’s a gusseted tongue, but only to a certain level of the boot.

How Did it Fit?

While part of the lower tongue is gusseted to keep the boot waterproofed, the upper section of the tongue is not. This will actually allow you to slip your feet in and out of the boots pretty easily. The boot is someplace in the middle of a slip-on boot and a lace-up boot. The Kamik Men’s Nationplus boot is pretty true to size as far as fit goes. You can wear the boot with a thick pair of socks without having to go up a size. If you plan on wearing more than one pair of socks, you might want to pick a half size higher to be safe.

Comfort Level

The boots can be completely laced or left partly laced for a comfort level that fits your activity. For example, I kept these boots near the door during the winter, so I could clear off the cars after a dusting of snow. I didn’t need to make a big production out of lacing up the boots, and they still provided my feet with comfortable protection. I did notice that standing around on the hard concrete meant I could feel the hardness of the sole. I added an insole, and had no problem at all after that.

How was the Traction on Snow and Ice?

The grip pattern is large, square rubber that will give you confidence on slippery surfaces. The grip doesn’t do as well in deep snow or mud, but on a snow-covered driveway, they were perfectly adequate. For the times that I’m heading out onto the lake for some ice fishing, I’ll end up wearing a different pair of boots. These were great near the back door, for trips to the wood pile, and taking the dogs for a walk.

Considerations Before Purchase

While the height of the boot is 11 inches from the sole to the top of the shaft, the tongue makes the puddle depth only 6.5 inches. This is still half a foot of protection from puddles, and perfectly adequate for snow shoveling.

The Kamik Men’s Nationplus boots have served me very well. While I might choose a heartier boot for serious hiking in the woods where I might run into large puddles of slush, for everyday use during the winter, it’s a terrific choice. This is especially true for the money involved. This is a mid-priced boot with performance and features that will be a surprise to those who think it’s a “cheap” boot at a “cheap” price.
