They say all the best ideas are the most simple and sometimes, this principle also applies to footwear.
For the best designs, the most straightforward construction wins out, time and again.
So, these men’s loafers by veteran shoe brand Clarks look as if they should live up to their expectation level. At least, so we hope.
Clarks Men’s Ashmont Race Slip On Loafer are simplicity themselves.
These are, as the name implies, a straightforward slip on shoe for men, which look as easy to wear as they are comfortable to have on.
You just slide them onto your feet and then casually go about your business.
These are actually advertised as ‘driving shoes’, but also may have many applications for indoor wearing as well.
Simple, yet dressy enough to be worn out somewhere smart, the first thing we have to point out is that these shoes are predominantly intended for indoor use.
However, within that, they work well for their environs.
With a breathable and shiny looking leather upper, these immediately hit you as being on the smart end of casual.
These feature some quality stitching around the leather upper and with the patent leather effect, have a sleek and suave appearance.
Looking at them, we don’t expect the comfort level to be anything other than A OK.
Flip them over and the sole will reveal a sturdy looking rubber lug driving sole.
Underneath the driving sole, the ortholite cushion foam should provide ample comfort.
In terms of color, we are looking at simple and effective.
Because these are men’s loafers they are never going to be in funky colors, with flashing neon lights attached.
There are three shades to choose from; black, brown and tan. That’s your lot – so take your pick!
The overall impression of these loafers is a sleek and narrow moccasin style shoe, with more than considerable traction on it.
We would share the manufacturer’s belief that these would probably work well as a driving shoe.
As we said, these are a designated driving shoe.
With larger than life grips, especially on the heel; these will help you remain grippy where it matters – on the car’s gas and brake pedals!
So, what about walking? Well, we’re not quite sure we would recommend these for anything more arduous than trotting around some well laid asphalt paving in these.
Let’s face it – these slip-on loafers are just that. They aren’t designed for athletic pursuits. You won’t be completing any triathlons in these shoes. In fact, you probably won’t even choose to wear them long distance outside.
The fact is, these have been specifically designed for driving in.
The back of the heel has a raised grip on the sole. This is meant to aid with pedal control, rather than walking.
Yes, you can walk short distances in these, but they are best as your designated driving shoe.
In addition to driving duties, we think these also make good house and indoor shoes.
A tad smart for a slipper, these are comfortable enough nonetheless to be worn whilst, well, loafing around the house.
They are also smart enough to “do” for the office, which makes them a good combination of comfort and smart.
Because they are not designed to be worn outdoors, it should go without saying that we don’t really advise getting these wet or going over any muddy, rocky or “difficult” terrain.
The sizing for these Clarks Men’s Ashmont Race Slip-On Loafers spans a seven to a thirteen, which should be most people’s sizes catered for.
Like all Clarks shoes, these are available in a half size, meaning nearly everyone should be able to find their correct size.
In terms of width, it would seem as if only the standard fitting is available. But what do the customers say about the sizing?
The ‘fit as expected’ rate of these loafers stands at 64% (correct at the time of writing).
We have to be honest and say that we have seen better statistics, but the fact remains that for nearly two thirds of people, their usual size is just right in this style.
For the remainder, we suggest that you might want to size up, as the most common complaint about these Men’s Loafers is that they run too narrow and a bit small.
We would advise anyone with a wide foot to perhaps size up by a half size, to get an accurate fit.
Other than that, these are a great fitting shoe, when you get the sizing right.
The Clarks Men’s Ashmont Race Slip-On Loafer are a well made and well designed casual shoe, perfect for driving in.
As we have mentioned, it’s not a good idea to wear these for anything heavy duty or even long-distance walking.
But for driving and light use around the house, they excel.
Any problems? Well, one or two people have mentioned an annoying squeak (specifically on tiles, oddly enough) but if you are only going to wear them indoors or for driving, this shouldn’t trouble you.
The Clarks Men’s Ashmont Race Slip-On Loafer have been designed as a driving, not a walking, shoe.
We think that if you are looking for your next pair of ultra-cozy slip on loafers for driving in, then these are an ideal candidate.
Unlike some driving shoes, which must be abandoned the second you step out from behind the wheel, or face ridicule, these are happily, highly presentable.
You can certainly wear them into work and around the house as well.
Smart, comfortable and with the right kind of traction for gripping to pedals, we would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a new driving companion!
