Flip flops designed to be worn in the Arctic Circle? That was our first thought when we were presented with these pair of Bonsai Sandals For Women.
And what the flipping heck are these anyway? Looking like the hybrid offspring of a moccasin and a flip flop, we weren’t quite sure ourselves until we tried them on.
And then we started to understand. These are so beautifully soft and cozy looking that now we can’t comprehend how the world has coped for so long without fluffy flip flops – which is exactly what the founding company who manufacture them thought, also.
The Bonsai Sandals company were born due to the conundrum of having cold feet and no socks available to wear.
We don’t know how often that particular scenario comes along, to be honest, but if you are a devotee of flip flops and lament the arrival of winter because it means you have to wear ‘normal’ shoes, then it is a compromise, at least.
Now we don’t expect that you ought to be running into a snowdrift wearing these or even risk getting frostbite, going outside in monumentally cold and icy conditions – but they might help keep your feet warmer on cool days, both outside and in.
According to the designers, these sheepskin flip flops straddle that awkward gap between Ugg boots, moccasin sandals and flip flops.
Based in California, we guess they are more designed for a rather milder winter than some other places and maybe better left for wearing around the house on truly cold days.
All the same, the company report success with their innovation and sales of these Bonsai Sheepskin Sandals keep going from strength to strength.
These Bonsai Sandals for Women are available in four simple colors; blue, pink, brown and black.
The blue and pink both have the white fleecy shearling on the insole and the brown one has a brown shearling, whereas the black one appears to be a lighter brown color.
According to the manufacturers, you should not fear the white fluffy virginal fleece on the blue and pink models becoming grayed – they fade to a light brown with repeated wearing, which is not as unsightly. AND you can hand wash these with some special wool cleaner – so they scrub up (very gently of course) pretty well.
This is good news for anyone who was worried that these would show signs of wear and dirt too soon.
All four colors are cute, but our favorites are the pink ones, which look like little pink clouds for your feet to float in.
The upper strap is a leather one, so between that and the super soft sheepskin lining, should bring both coolness and moisture control to your feet, as well as nice soft feeling as well.
These are definitely an unusual look and something that will bring you compliments on your footwear when you wear them outside!
These sheepskin flip flops are only available in a full size and the advice according the manufacturers is that if you are a half size, to size down because these will stretch.
80% of customers are wholly satisfied that these represented a good fit and we are confident that by following this advice, you should be able to achieve the right size for you.
Obviously, these look like the most comfortable thing ever, how could they not be, with a sheepskin lining that is like putting your foot into a little piece of heaven?
As we have mentioned before, the sheepskin and leather that these are made out of do stretch. So if you are in the slightest doubt about choosing the right size, get one smaller, in case these end up being too big for you.
Pretty much everyone who has worn these attests to their supreme comfort. They are as warm and fluffy as they look, and the sole will bend and mold itself to fit your individual foot shape.
These have a rubber sole and should wear well, we think.
Despite these being inspired by the winter to keep the naked foot a bit warmer, unless you have a constitution of steel, we don’t advise leaping into a snowdrift wearing these. They might be a bit chilly!
But even if your feet are impervious to temperature, wet conditions, be they snow or rain are not going to be something you want to expose these fluffy lined shoes to.
The good news is that they can be washed and will not be harmed by getting wet. The only reason you would not want to get these wet whilst wearing them, is pretty self-explanatory – they will feel wet.
As we have also said, these may go a little brown on the soles over time. If this bothers you, then it might be best to opt for the brown or black flip flops in the first place – although of course you can wash these and they clean up beautifully.
But it is for this reason that we would advise you not to wear them anywhere they are likely to get excessively dirty in the first place.
It has to be said, that for $59 these are not exactly the cheapest flip flops on the market. But then, they are hardly run of the mill either.
Everything about these shoes screams luxury. These are a premium, high end product, ideal for indulgence and spoiling yourself in.
We wouldn’t expect something made of such quality materials – top drawer shearling sheepskin, leather and rubber – to be bargain basement after all.
In short, if you like your feet pampered and want something cute and different this season, we think these Bonsai Flip Flops make the perfect house slipper or slightly warmer sandal for outdoors.
